But I was raised in a very small town which, in retrospect, I realize had no blacks at all. But I was raised to respect everyone regardless of color, so I probably shut out any thing that didn't fit in with my upbringing. I found out only years later that the town actually discouraged blacks from moving in, but i didn't see it. It is my observation of the Academy that Steiger's bravado would appeal to the Academy over Poitier's subtlety. We know how "they" work by this time.
